You’re presuming that everyone is entitled to a romance with a character of their choosing, or even a romance that they like.
I think you’re also assuming that a romance arc with Varric and/or Aveline would have been exactly the relationship you remember, but with a kissing scene added. It wouldn’t. Varric would have been someone else. Instead of Aveline talking about her Dad, you would have had sex with her. Is that better? Is the friendship you formed with Varric so unworthwhile that you would have traded it in for something else which may not even be what you imagine? He is the way he is because that’s what he was written to be.

Yes, I know everyone wants more. More, more, more. I’m just not sure why everyone would so readily discard what they already have, assuming that they wouldn’t change it in the act of transforming it into something else. In my opinion, not every fictional relationship is made more appealing by adding romance to it.

Why not add death? Man, even a romance cupcake would start to taste a bit samey after a while, wouldn’t it? Bah.

Alright, I’m generally with you on this (even if I’m not sure about the manner it was delievered), but I really got to question this one thing:

“Instead of Aveline talking about her Dad, you would have had sex with her.”

Maybe you’re just going for the semi-funny bit of that, but I’m honestly wondering if you’re intending that in context of the reason why she told that story about her Dad. Not to mention adding that it strikes me as kind of odd that you seem to think a lover couldn’t have had that exact same conversation…why? This is incredibly odd to me, this notion that lovers couldn’t also have a deep friendship in which they share meaningful stories as a means of comforting the person they love.

Y’know. As opposed to sitting beside them on a bed and staring at the wall.

Thank you! I don’t even care that Aveline or Varric weren’t romanceable, but the thought that you can’t be in a deep and satisfying friendship with someone you’re in a romantic and sexual relationship is incredibly strange to me.

And as far as this goes for video games, I would like to put forth Garrus as exhibit A. He and Shepard had a great friendship that grew into a romance. Now, I understand that in Dragon Age 2, Hawke only has one game. I’m not saying Varric or Aveline should have been options for romances (I like them as is). But I see absolutely no reason why any of the conversations you have as friends couldn’t also be used in a romance. Just…really?
